J. Berry Hykin


Berry has been with Woodward & Company since 2004. She received her J.D. from the University of Victoria in 2005 where she took an intensive Indigenous Legal Studies program. Berry was called to the BC Bar in September, 2006 and the Alberta Bar in January, 2011. She has appeared as counsel and co-counsel in Federal Court, BC Supreme Court, BC Provincial Court, Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench and before administrative tribunals. Berry has taken civil mediation and family law mediation training.

Berry’s practice includes band governance, reserve land management and housing, environmental management and enforcement on reserve, economic and corporate development, and employment law, with a focus on assisting employer First Nations and Aboriginal groups. Berry works with First Nations to draft, develop and implement First Nation laws and policies, including land codes, matrimonial real property laws, bylaws under the Indian Act, contracts, and housing, personnel and other policies. Berry also provides advice to First Nations concerning band governance, administrative law and best practices, including human rights and conflict of interest issues.

Berry started out in the West Kootenays before ending up in Victoria. She has a BA (honors) in Classical Studies (University of Victoria and Boston College) that she finds surprisingly relevant to the practice of aboriginal law. Berry is an avid animal lover and, having lived on farms for most of her life, loves to get outside whenever she can.
