First Nations can develop and implement their own Membership Codes, which replaces the outdated and prescriptive requirements of the Indian Act, and instead allows a First Nation to determine who is entitled to be a member. Many First Nations have chosen to enact their own custom Membership Code to better reflect their own customs, values and traditions. We regularly assist First Nations across the country with the development and implementation of Membership Codes.
