Practicing at Woodward and Company since 2023, Caolan’s work spans many areas of law including corporate and commercial work, governance, natural resources and land interests.
Prior to starting with W&Co., Caolan served various Indigenous governments, businesses and organizations by facilitating business structuring / reorganization arrangements involving economic development entities, drafting and interpreting governance legislation and policy documents and advising in respect of a wide range of commercial and transactional arrangements.
Additionally, Caolan has experience advising on project development matters involving lands subject to section 35 rights, assisting clients with navigating consultation and regulatory processes including provincial/federal environmental assessments, and regularly providing guidance regarding the implications of historic and modern treaties and federal land management regimes. He has also spent time advising on the impacts of international standards (UNDRIP) on Canada’s regulatory framework, and assessing, interpreting and translating case law developments and statutory amendments for a variety of audiences.
Caolan holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Calgary (B.Sc, 2011) and earned his law degree from University of Saskatchewan (J.D. with distinction, 2015).
Caolan is passionate about advancing reconciliation with Indigenous peoples by supporting their inherent right to self-determination, promoting and facilitating adoption of Indigenous legal orders within Canada’s broader legal framework and strengthening economic capacity by facilitating Indigenous participation in, and receipt of meaningful benefits from, sustainable commercial arrangements.
