Nicholas joined Woodward & Co. in 2025 as a Senior Counsel. He is a Toronto-based lawyer with extensive experience in advocacy and public policy, with significant work in Indigenous rights, energy and climate change, constitutional law, commercial litigation, professional negligence, class actions, and insurance.

Prior to joining Woodward & Co., Nicholas maintained a regulatory advocacy and risk advisory practice focused on energy and climate change on behalf of First Nations, as well as clients in the private sector and government. He regularly appeared before the Ontario Energy Board on issues relating to Indigenous participation and interests in the energy sector, project approvals, environmental protection, and energy transition. Among his successes, he helped negotiate the establishment of a path-breaking Indigenous Working Group on energy issues and proposals designed to stimulate Indigenous activity and ownership in the development of renewable natural gas.

Nicholas has served as a senior advisor to provincial and federal cabinet ministers, advising on litigation, financial regulation, trade, sustainable finance, and climate and justice policy. He played key roles in implementing Ontario’s carbon pricing regime, as well as supporting Ontario’s premier during the NAFTA negotiations and Canada’s Attorney General on COVID-related policy and litigation He previously worked as a litigator at leading firms in Toronto, appearing before all levels of court in Ontario, as well as Canada’s Federal Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of British Columbia.

Nicholas holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Political Studies from Queen’s University, a Juris Doctor from the University of Toronto, and an LL.M. from Columbia Law School, where he graduated as a James Kent Scholar (highest honours) in 2008. Nicholas has presented regularly before corporate audiences, professional associations, and at Canadian universities and law schools on various public policy and legal topics relating to climate change, energy, and Indigenous rights.

Outside of work, Nicholas enjoys music, sports, reading, and movies.
