Ellen joined Woodward & Company in 2026, drawn to the firm’s commitment to community-based legal practice rooted in social justice, decolonization, and meaningful relationships with Indigenous Peoples. Inspired by teachers and Elders who have shared teachings about treaty relationships and responsibilities, Ellen is committed to supporting the strengthening and revitalization of Indigenous laws on their own terms.
Prior to joining W&Co., Ellen worked as Counsel with the Human Rights Law Section at the federal Department of Justice, where she advised on domestic and international human rights issues. They completed their articles through the Department of Justice’s Legal Excellence Program, including rotations with Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada, Employment and Social Development Canada, and the Human Rights Law Section.
Ellen holds a Bachelor of Journalism and Humanities (High Distinction) from Carleton University and a Bachelor of Civil Law and Juris Doctor from McGill University (2023). During law school, she worked with organizations including Human Rights Watch, Forum for Human Rights, and the Canadian Centre for Elder Law, while also serving Montreal residents through community legal clinics. She is bilingual in English and French.
Outside of her legal practice, Ellen is passionate about economic justice is a member of the Basic Income Youth Collective, where they help coordinate national youth-led advocacy for guaranteed basic income. Ellen is happiest exploring the outdoors, whether on a mountain summit, in a meadow, or beside a babbling brook.
